Frequently Asked Questions
My printer has seriously clogged heads, will Harvey Head Cleaner help?
No. Harvey will help keep heads clean but won't help unclog them. If you can't locate good help on getting your heads unclogged, email firstname.lastname@example.org, and we'll pass along some tips, but Harvey is meant to keep printers from getting clogged. It is NOT for cleaning heads which are already clogged.
Why isn't there a Mac Version?
Because Harvey has to be able to awaken a sleeping computer, the program has to live deeper in an operating system than most programs. This makes the design of the software that much more difficult, and especially for a Mac environment. We've had some recent encouragement about developing a Mac friendly Harvey and we're accepting email addresses of people who'd like to be notified when there's a Mac Harvey ready for testing.
Isn't it harmful to keep my computer and my inkjet printer on all the time?
No, not at all. An inkjet printer uses virtually no power when not printing. We attached a Watt useage meter to several inkjet printers and could not get any reading at all above .00 when not being used. I'm sure there was actually some wattage to light the power-on LED, but it was too small to measure.
(This is NOT true of laser printers - they have to keep fusing assemblies hot, and they do use power. Inkjets don't have fusing assemblies and use virtually no power when not in use.)
Simliarly, a computer uses very little power - they go into a sleep mode. But please turn off your monitor. That's the power eater.
Many experts say that turning a computer on and off causes it far more potential harm than leaving it on. And your printer can very definitely be helped by being left on with Harvey Head Cleaner installed.
Can I use Harvey Head Cleaner on a network?
Sure. There needs to be a clear path from the computer where Harvey is installed to the printer. This may require that a server or another computer must remain powered up also, if the path goes through them to get to the printer. Harvey can awaken the computer on which it's installed, but it cannot awaken a computer further down the network. So in a LAN situation you are best to install the program on the computer to which the printer is attached.
Harvey cannot flip the switch on a A-B box, but today most printers are run by USB and there is no practical limit to how many printers can be run by Harvey off one computer.
Can I install more than one Version of Harvey on my computer?
Certainly. We've got three versions running four printers in our graphics area. We've got the printers all set on different schedules - one is once weekly, two are daily and one is twice weekly.
What happens when the power goes off?
If you computer is set to boot up when power is restored, then Havey will print as soon as booting up is completed if a scheduled printing was missed. It won't wait for the next scheduled print time.
What are license keys?
To prevent piracy we employ a system of serial numbers and integrated license keys. When you download Harvey Head Cleaner your transaction number is your serial number. A license key is generated for your downloaded copy and emailed to you as part of the download sequence. This key is 30 digits long and contains only Zeroes no "o's." We recommend copying and pasting it to prevent errors.
